September, Big Month for Fashion

Fashion magazines rebound for big September issues

Fashion models still aren’t likely to gain a pound, but magazines showcasing them are getting heavier this September. That’s good news for an industry that’s been plagued by declines in advertising pages in recent years.

September is the most important month for glossy magazines. Vogue’s robust 2007 September issue — which actually starred in a film called “The September Issue” — carried a whopping 725 pages of ads. But when the financial sector collapsed, so did luxury advertising. The 2009 issue fell to 428 ad pages.

Now, publisher Conde Nast expects a rebound for several titles, with Vogue bringing in 532 ad pages this September — a 24 percent increase over 2009. And Vogue isn’t the only magazine putting on weight.

Glamour will clock in with 241 pages of ads, a 57 percent increase from last September’s showing of 153 pages. W magazine rose 31 percent, while Teen Vogue gained more modestly at 4.5 percent.

The magazine Lucky, however, dropped nearly 11 percent.

On the men’s side, the numbers aren’t as rosy. GQ gained slightly (2.9 percent), but Details dropped significantly (23 percent).

The New York Times reports that two Hearst fashion magazines will post sizable gains—Harper’s Bazaar (12 percent) and Marie Claire (11 percent). Meanwhile, Cosmopolitan dropped a half a page over 2009’s tally.

Also, Hachette Filipacchi’s Elle improved by 18 percent year-to-year, and Time Inc.’s InStyle is up 16 percent.

So who’ll be gracing the cover of these fatter September issues?

The Huffington Post has a slideshow of some of the celebrities whose covers will hit newsstands this fall, including Halle Berry (Vogue), Hilary Swank (InStyle), Lady Gaga (Vanity Fair), Julia Roberts (Elle), Jennifer Aniston (Harper’s Bazaar) and Justin Bieber (Teen Vogue).
