Nation’s Beauties Flop in Pageants

December 28, 2008

Vietnamese women are ranked 48th and men 28th most successful in the world in beauty competitions.

Total points gained of 42.5 for men and 63 for women since 1999 in various beauty competitions have earned the country these rankings, according to the Global Beauties website.

Vietnamese male contestants have earned their points in Manhunt, Mister World and Mister International compentitions. Women contestants have earned their points in Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss International, Miss Earth and Miss Tourism Queen International competitions.

Males scored 22.5 at International Manhunt competitions, zero at Mister World and 20 at Mister International. The latest win was gained by newly crowned Mister International Ngo Tien Doan at the contest in Taipei in November 2008.

“I feel very happy as I have succeeded to confirm Vietnamese beauty at international competitions,” said Doan. “I have tried my best to help international friends understand more about Viet Nam.”

Doan also expressed his sympathy with contestants returning home without any prize.

“Anyone who has and will compete in beauty pageants would try their best to confirm “Vietnamese beauty,” he said. “We should warmly welcome them back rather than criticising them. Because actually, not all of them have enough time to prepare well for the competitions.”

At Mister World 2007, super model Ho Duc Vinh won the Best Traditional Costume title, but this scored no marks in the list as it was a subordinate prize.

Super models Binh Minh (2002), Quang Hoa (2006), Tien Doan (2007) and Nguyen Van Thinh (2008) have competed at Manhunt International. Doan won the highest prize among them with the Best Body title at the South Korean event.

China, Venezuela and India top the list for men’s beauty. Together with Viet Nam, other Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore, the Philippines and Indonesia are among top 30 on the list.

Viet Nam jumped up this year to 48th position for women from last year’s 55th position thanks to Duong Truong Thien Ly’s 51 points at Miss World contest in South Africa earlier this month, along with Nguyen Thuy Lam’s 12 points from the Miss Universe pageant in Viet Nam’s Nha Trang City in July this year.

At the Miss World, Ly won Miss People’s Choice title and also played well at the Miss Sport competition round.

Lam was among 15 finalists at the Miss Universe.

Cao Thuy Duong at the Miss International in Macau (November 2008), and Chung Thuc Quyen, who won Beauty with a Purpose at Miss Tourism Queen International in China (March 2008) scored no marks. Viet Nam did not send any contestants to Miss Earth in the Philippines (November 2008).

In the Grand Slam Ranking of global women’s beauty Venezuela remains on top with a total 644.5 marks, while India and the US rank 2nd and 3rd. Countries next in ranking are Spain, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Russia, China, Colombia and the Philippines. (VNS)
